Anna Kournikova smiles as she prepares to reveal her latest indulgence

Meticulously slicing a juicy red apple while gripping a knife with her long, slender fingers, Anna Kournikova smiles as she prepares to reveal her latest indulgence. The sexiest athlete in the history of women's sports is discussing what it's like, at 25, to be retired -- well, that's not what she calls it, because she hasn't ruled out a comeback -- and now she's flashing those perfect white teeth and preparing to devour the fruit of her labor.

"I read like crazy," she says, becoming visibly excited. "Magazines, short stories, books -- especially when I'm on an airplane or the treadmill or the exercise bike. Lately I've been into summer chick-lit, lighthearted stuff. And I'm into all kinds of magazines, from Vogue to O to Good Housekeeping. Yesterday on the plane I was reading [a Good Housekeeping cover story] about Rachael Ray and her recipes. Hey, I'm home a lot now, and I want to start learning how to cook."

Good Housekeeping? Good Lord. This is ANNA KOURNIKOVA, she of the haute couture and the nude stalkers and the sassy bravado, the fall of Russian Communism brought to its conspicuous extreme. Now here she is, sitting in a hotel suite in suburban Sacramento, where in a few hours she'll play a World Team Tennis match, telling me about her woeful inability to co-mingle with celebrities ("I've been to like three Hollywood parties, and the last one was after the Teen Choice Awards last year, and everybody was under the age of 21") and her forays into a life of domesticity.

What happened to the impetuous girl whose "Anna-tude" inspired one of the Sports Illustrated stories I've most enjoyed writing? In 1998 I profiled Kournikova, and the interview ended with the young beauty throwing her head back while sitting in the passenger seat of a Mustang convertible, the California desert wind whipping her long, blonde hair across her tanned face as she commanded: "I have a lot of boyfriends -- I want you to write that. Every country I visit, I have a different boyfriend. And I kiss them all."

The answer, as I would come to learn during our hour-long conversation on Wednesday, is that she grew up. The Kournikova I met in the spring of 1998 was 16 and very much aware of her bursting-at-the-seams potential, both on and off the tennis court. She would ultimately deliver more as a celebrity than as a champion -- how many of you have already fired off e-mails reminding me that Kournikova never won a tournament on the WTA Tour (which is like noting that Mike Shanahan has never won a Super Bowl without John Elway)? -- but I am not hearing any of this garbage that she wasn't a legitimate player.

As I recalled during our conversation on Wednesday, the week after my Kournikova story ran, at what was then called the Lipton Tournament in Key Biscayne, Fla. (unofficially dubbed the "fifth major" at the time), Anna became the first player in history to defeat three top 10 players in a single event ...

"Four," Kournikova corrected.

Right, four top 10 players, before letting a fellow teenager looking for her first title named Venus Williams off the hook and losing a three-set final. A few months later, at a pre-Wimbledon tournament, Kournikova defeated Steffi Graf ...

"On grass, with three torn ligaments in my right hand," Kournikova interjected. "I fell at three-all in the third set and ripped up my hand and finished the match. I was only the second player to beat her on grass in the '90s."

The injury forced Kournikova, who had been a Wimbledon semifinalist at the age of 15, to withdraw from that tournament, and a series of other injuries (foot, back, thumb) kept her from possibly approaching the heights reached by contemporaries Martina Hingis and Venus and Serena Williams. By 2003 Kournikova had been diagnosed with chronic spinal lumbar dysfunction, "where your S1 joints always move and one hip is higher than the other," she says.

Jennifer Hudson are blossoming her career

Jennifer Hudson has spent the past few months recovering from the tragic murder of her mother, brother and nephew. Now, both her personal life and her career are blossoming.

Wednesday night, the star returned to the place that first brought her into our living rooms, American Idol. Following the Motown-themed show, the season-three, seventh-place finisher—who famously went on to win a Grammy and an Oscar—taped a performance of her single "If This Isn't Love" to air on the show at a later date.

Following the performance, Hudson, whose tour alongside Robin Thicke kicks off on March 31, spilled a few beans to Ryan Seacrest. When asked about her engagement and upcoming nuptials to David Otunga, she admitted a date had been set.

"Yeah, but it's a secret," the 25-year-old singer said. "I can't tell anybody."

Hudson gushed a little further when she taped her Thursday-afternoon appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

After the two sang "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" from DreamGirls as part of the show's Bathroom Concert Series, the host asked about the happy couple.

"We're like big kids, so we like to ride bikes, and one thing I like to do is I put my dog in her little basket and put her on my back and then we ride the bike to the dog park," Hudson told her.

DeGeneres, as usual, had an appropriate engagement gift: a romantic bicycle built for two.

Brangelina "very busy trying to get in" to the awards show.

Even though Ryan Seacrest hosts "American Idol" -- the biggest show on TV -- he couldn't score an interview with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie on E!'s live Golden Globes red carpet broadcast.

After he finished asking Beyoncé a few snooze-worthy questions, Seacrest ran off in a desperate attempt to grab a minute with Hollywood's hottest couple, who dared to turn their backs on the hardest-working man in show business. Can you say diss? Seconds later, the dynamic duo added insult to injury by granting a last-minute interview to Ryan's red carpet competitor, "Access Hollywood's" Billy Bush. Ouch!

Seacrest laughed off the incident and noted that Brangelina ignored him on E!'s red carpet telecast because they were "very busy trying to get in" to the awards show. Yeah, right.

Better luck at the Oscars!

Kate Winslet have racked up five Academy Award nominations

For Kate Winslet - New York resident, perennial Oscar nominee and the very model of a modern major movie star - the road to her own Oscar revolution may begin at Sunday's 66th annual Golden Globe Awards.

The show can be seen live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills beginning at 8 p.m. on NBC.

Winslet, who at 33 is the youngest actress to have racked up five Academy Award nominations, is a likely Globe winner for either Best Actress in a Drama for "Revolutionary Road" or Best Supporting Actress for "The Reader." A triumph for her in either category could be repeated when this year's Oscars are handed out Feb. 22.

Oscar nominations will be announced Jan. 22.

Winslet goes into the evening with five unwon Globe nominations as well. Her competitors Sunday - who include Angelina Jolie ("Changeling"), Meryl Streep ("Doubt"), Anne Hathaway ("Rachel Getting Married"), Penelope Cruz ("Vicky Cristina Barcelona") and Marisa Tomei ("The Wrestler") - should be prepared to slip their speeches back into their purses.

But the English actress, married to her "Revolutionary Road" director Sam Mendes and mother of two kids (her and Mendes' son, Joe, is 5; Mia, her daughter with British filmmaker Jim Threapleton, is 8), considers being a New York mom her most important role. She's frequently spotted dropping her kids at school and bopping around her Chelsea neighborhood when not on film sets.

The family also has a residence in the British countryside.

"We divide our time, and it's great," Winslet told the Daily News.

"I think it also helps the kids just be regular kids. The other thing that's important to us is that the kids know that Sam and I do what we do because we love it and it's hard work. It's not just a glamorous thing."

Mendes, an Oscar winner for "American Beauty," is currently directing "The Cherry Orchard" and "The Winter's Tale" at the Brooklyn Academy of Music as part of the Bridge Project, a collaboration with London's Old Vic theater. He and Winslet, together since 2001, bought their loft in the city in 2004.

"It's very possible in New York to be yourself, free of all judgment," Winslet told The News. "That's one of the great things about the city - you are who you are, and people are very accepting."

Winslet's previous Oscar and Globe nominations - Supporting Actress nods for "Sense and Sensibility" (1995) and "Iris" (2001) and Best Actress for "Titanic" (1997), "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" (2004) and "Little Children" (2006) - certainly haven't gone to her head, but she's honest enough to speak from her heart.

"I think having gone through award season so many times and not winning, I'm very good at losing and enjoying it," she joked at the "Revolutionary Road" premiere last month.

But of her Oscar chances this year, Winslet did tell a British magazine, "I want to win. ... I'm not denying that. I don't want to be sitting there with a fixed grin on my face while someone else wins."
